INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Mitch Daniels is appealing a decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deny federal aid for parts of north central Indiana devastated by a tornado in October.

Daniels asked FEMA in November for federal assistance for people affected by the tornado that swept through parts of Elkhart, Kosciusko and Marshall counties. FEMA denied that request on Nov. 20.

Daniels sent a letter Friday asking FEMA to reconsider. Daniels says local government and volunteer agencies are doing all they can, but more work needs to be done.

The storm destroyed 64 homes and damaged more than 150 others. More than 100 businesses were damaged.
