INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Small Business Administration is making low-interest loans available to northern Indiana residents whose homes or businesses were damaged by storms and tornadoes in October.

The action by SBA Administrator Steve Preston on Wednesday followed a Dec. 10 letter from Gov. Mitch Daniels, who asked for disaster declarations for Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Marshall, Noble and St. Joseph counties.

The SBA will open an office at the Nappanee Public Library on Friday to issue applications and answer questions.

SBA applications for property damage must be returned by March 10. The agency's deadline for applications to compensate residents for economic losses is Oct. 8.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture also offered loans to farmers for losses caused by the Oct. 18 storms. The Nappanee area was hardest hit, with dozens of homes and businesses destroyed. That application deadline is Aug. 20.
