ELKHART - Time is running out for basketball fans.
The NCAA Tournament Round of 64 starts on Thursday, and that means you have hours left to fill out your bracket.

Marcus Szymanowski is ready to sit back and watch March Madness play out, hopefully in his favor.

His bracket is all filled out.

He's picked his winner.

We all know the possibility of picking a perfect bracket is slim, but one can try.

"You have to do your research," Szymanowski said.

For about 20 years, he's had the same routine.

"I focus on the conference championship the week before. You get to see who's hot," Szymanowski said.

It's somewhat of a science, an art.

You have to pick the winners and at the same time pick the losers, all while keeping emotion out of it.

"I'm a big Big Ten guy," Szymanowski said. "I play favorites to the IU's, Michigan's, because I've seen them play and watch the most," Szymanowski said.

That's not emotion talking - Szymanowski did his homeowork all season long.

He made some reasonable choices:

"This bracket right here.. IU being number one seed."

But also some interesting ones:

"This is where I've pinpointed the mascot rule: I've got Marquette Golden Eagles versus Miami Hurricanes. So what's gonna win? A golden eagle or a hurricane? Well, an eagle's gonna fly over the hurricane, so it's gonna advance," Szymanowski said.

"You can fill out a crazy looking bracket and you may end up being the smartest person on earth," said Daniel Evans with bracketologyexpert.com.
He said the tournament is unpredictable. The top team could easily end up at the bottom and vice versa of course.

"A lot of it is luck, but if you look at the percentages, you can go through and say two 12s [seed] usually beat 5s [seed] every year," Evans said.

You can study the NCAA and watch every game.

You could even analyze coaches and players and the odds of winning.

But at the end of the day, any team could be the next champion.

"In all reality, it's luck and how it works out," Szymanowski said.
