ELKHART – The mother of an Elkhart man whose body was found in a barrel in the St. Joseph River last September says she knew who murdered her son.
Police apparently had the same suspicions, and on Wednesday, more than 7 months after the killing, arrested the man they think shot 44-year-old Mark Miller.
The suspect worked with Miller at his tattoo shop.
Sheila Miller, whose son Mark was found shot and killed in a barrel near the Six Span Bridge, says she knew right away who pulled the trigger.
"I suspected (Todd Stewart) from the beginning," Sheila said. "I told him that, that it was him."
After a more than seven-month investigation, the Elkhart County prosecutor's office announced it is charging 35-year-old Todd Stewart with murder. He was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon.
"He worked for Mark, he was supposed to be Mark's best friend," said Sheila. "Some best friend, huh?"
Investigators say the two worked together at Miller's tattoo shop.
"(Stewart) wanted the tattoo shop, I know that," Sheila added.
Detectives searched a Bristol home last October where, according to phone listings, someone with the last name Stewart lives. A man who answered the door on Wednesday declined to comment.
Police say they interviewed someone who worked with Miller and Stewart, who personally witnessed the shooting and admitted helping load the barrel containing a body into the back of Stewart's truck.
Sheila Miller says she expects more arrests, because she says Stewart didn't act alone.
"It's not just him," Sheila said. "There's more."
Stewart faces up to 65 years in prison for the murder and makes his first court appearance Thursday in Elkhart.
