SOUTH BEND -

A South Bend police officer shot and killed a pit bull Thursday that reportedly attacked another officer.

It happened in the 1900 block of West Bergan Street around 5 p.m.

According to Christian Sheckler with our partners at the South Bend Tribune, police said the dog barked, lunged at the first officer and bit his handgun.

The incident comes a week after the South Bend Common Council changed the city's animal care ordinance -- removing restrictions targeting specific breeds.
