A few of my friends have been on me lately because I have not written a column on the Affordable Care Act. So I will because I am an avid supporter of the laws of our land, so much so that I might volunteer as president of the John Roberts fan club.
While I am at it I also want to give a shout out to the Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tank that first came up with the outline for the plan eventually proposed by President Obama. And I would be remiss if I did not thank Mitt Romney for leading the way in Massachusetts with not only an effective but popular plan that he knew how to sell and implement. When it comes to smart marketing, Romney could teach that Obama fellow a thing or two.
Now that I got all the sarcastic (but accurate) comments out in one paragraph here is why I support anything close to universal health care. It is not only the right thing to do it is the moral thing to do. To boil it down to the most simple form, and Romney did, in fact, say this, the more people who get health care eventually we will have fewer unhealthy people and fewer unhealthy people will cause a dramatic drop in health care costs for all of us. That will take at least a generation to see, but see it we will. I could go on and on with the moral issue but will bring up just one more. What about the babies? With proper and affordable pre-natal care combined with the same care for newborns and beyond we can all pat ourselves on the back for doing a good and moral thing. This is America where we should take care of our own.
Affordable health care for all is a no brainer to me, but leave it to the Obama administration for being unable to sell a good thing. They couldn’t market free water to a farmer in a drought. Instead they have circles run around them by conservative billionaires who are out to save and improve their personal agendas and all the while couldn’t care less about the health of their fellow citizens. Still, they deserve points for buying propaganda that works. It seems like only yesterday I heard employers and employees constantly crying out about the cost of health care. What? Suddenly we are all happy with that?
Affordable health care will never be cheap health care and it shouldn’t be. But we can do a lot better than we have been doing and it is very much the right and moral and American thing to do.
