There are two grade schools within three blocks of my house and I drive by one or both nearly every day. Last Friday I drove by one of those schools late in the morning, came home, turned on the computer and found the first reports of the massacre in Newtown. It took a few minutes for me to make the connection between what I just read and what I just saw on my drive.
The kids at the school I passed by, the school my grandson attends, were playing outside protected only by a high chainlink fence and only a few yards from one of the busiest roads in South Bend. Was I being paranoid thinking what could happen to those little kids, something evil carried out by an unbalanced person with easy access to killing machines? I don’t think so.
How wrong is it, how insane is it that in many parts of the USA it is more difficult to adopt a dog from the Humane Society than it is to buy a gun? And someone can kill little kids with guns just like that but a good family has to jump through hoops to adopt an unwanted child?

There can be no excuses any more. We must have a sane gun policy in this country, and the best way to get there is people of good will banding together. By that I mean all of us who do not want to own a gun and all of those good Americans who belong to the sporting community.
There is no need to go on and on here; ranting or wringing our hands can do no good. Just good people working for a good common cause. For the kids.
