According to the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office, the elderly woman found beaten to death in her home last week called police hours before her body was found. This new information comes as charges are filed against the Elkhart teen accused in her death.
The Elkhart County prosecutor tells us 17-year-old Luis Bailey was charged today with murder. He is accused of killing 76-year-old Norma Hopper.
Hopper was found dead in her Elkhart home on Michael Drive a week ago. Police say she called police at 3 a.m. that morning saying someone was ringing her doorbell.
When officers arrived a half hour later they found no one suspicious around her home.
Hopper's niece told WSBT that police did speak with Hopper before they left her house.
Then, a few hours later at 10:30 a.m, Hopper's niece found her body – she had been badly beaten.
According to the prosecutor's office, an autopsy revealed she died of blunt force trauma and had been beaten in her face and head.
Police later learned that Bailey was in a relationship with a woman who lives near Hopper.
Hoppers car had been stolen – it was later found in Michigan.
Bailey will appear in front of a judge next week for his initial hearing.
