After spending much of the weekend in the dark, power is back on this morning for Indiana Michigan Power customers in our area affected by Friday's whipping winds -- according to I&M's.
"All customers who were impacted after the Dec. 21 winter storm that hit I&M's service area (peak of 20,000 customers in Indiana and 15,000 customers in Michigan) have now been restored," according to a release from I&M's spokesperson. "We appreciate all of our customers for their patience and understanding as we worked to get everyone back up and running through this restoration effort. Thank you also for your help communicating outage updates and tips, and for helping share our messsages related to public safety."
Many people living in this neighborhood in Green Township near South Bend used generators and kept their fireplaces going to keep warm while they waited for the electricity to come back on.
Neighbors say it seems like their homes are always the last to get power back when there's an outage.
“It is very frustrating this area here is always the last to get turned back on,” said Ruth Koepkey. “There are only 12 houses from Roosevelt down to Madison and we're the last ones to get power, it never fails.”
A spokeswoman for I&M says the last stage of the restoration process can be time consuming because it involves small pockets of outages and addressing individual properties.
