For two or three hours in the late afternoon of Thur., March 5th, 2009, seven white-tailed deer managed to wander out onto the ice at Barron Lake in Niles.
There were reports, that at one time, at least one of the deer had fallen through the ice, but it had somehow managed to get back onto solid footing.
Also, efforts were made by local volunteer firefighters from Howard Twp. to assist the deer off the ice, although I'm not sure how they intended to do that.
At times when the deer appeared to get close to the shore, near the southern end, to "escape" their plight, they seemed to get spooked by the increased vehicular traffic from curious onlookers.
Eventually, after running back across the lake to the northeast corner, the deer were observed splashing through the narrow strip of open water near the shore, reaching dry land, and were last seen heading east up the banks of the lake towards a nearby wooded area.

HTFD got a lot of calls about the deer on the ice and wanted someone to do something or they would do something. So HTFD put on ice rescue suits on and walked out on to the ice to chase the deer . Soon as we went 200' The deer ran off the ice..
