Hello my name is Richard Gamber I shot this buck on 10/17/2009 in Kosciusko county. I took a chance on a 49 yrd shot with my bow. I shot is right through the heart it ran about 70 yrds and went down. The unoffical score is 193 6/8. The Indiana state record is just over 195 of deer season. I am not sure what the state record is for bow season, but I think that is was 150 that means I will set a new state record. The deer rack will have to dry for 60 days before I will get an officail score.

Hey dillhole, got lucky but no business taking that shot, 9 out of 10 you miss or wound that sucker and waste something really special. Dont ever take that shot again way out of range, wouldnt brag about the range, just stupid! couldve been bad deal!

zoogift, that's obvious, that he is jealous. I posted this article on my fb page and said how I wish Richard had left his bow in the truck and I had bagged the buck! Absolutely awesome, Richard.

HEY STEVE--- If you notice he wasn't using a long bow. With the new bows of today a 50 yard poke is nothing. In fact it is still packing more punch than a 10 yd shot from a bow made ten years ago. Just because you can't shoot, don't mean we can't.

Came back from Fort Wayne last eve and pickup in front of us hit a deer. It didn't seem to have done much damage to his truck but we were right behind him and if we would have it would have been bad for our van

Great deer, I hope to be able to just see a deer around here like that during the season in my lifetime much less harvest one. Congrats

I tend to agree with Steve that 49 yds is a looong way. Risk vs reward. Congrats on the deer! I personally see too many things going wrong at that distance. If you have that range all I can say is WOW. I'd wait and play the odds for a closer shot

"I shot is right through the heart it ran about 70 yrds and went down." Good bowhunters practice to 70 yards. If you can put 3 arrows in a paper plate at 70 yards, you should have all the confidence in the world at 49. Can I have the backstraps?

5 yards is more difficult says ...

On Tuesday, Oct 27 at 1:21 PM

Commenter

Try shooting a buck directly below your deerstand. Much more difficult than a 49 yard shot. Most bow hunters probably don't practice a 5 yard shot. I harvest two bucks at 10 paces and they were difficult shots. Buck fever amplifies at that range.

49 yards is nothing, my bow is set up for 60 yards and I practice to that distance so when i see a deer that size I know I can get him. All I can say is congrats on a once in a life time deer. That a nice Pope and Young record book deer!!

LA, I suppose he was going to live forever? As hunters, we do not place animals above us, nor below us, but we do have the ability to understand that conservation through hunting is the ONLY way for man and wildlife to coexist. Think about it...

I just don't see why everybody is saying way too long of a shot it just doesn't make sense. If you take your advice and that deer walked right in front of you from 49 yards you wouldn't shoot, yes you would because i would. Great deer congratulations

A new Pope and Young Indiana State Record for sure. I practice and hit well out to 80 yards with my bow, so whoever thinks 49 yards is to far doesn't really put enough effort into their Deer hunting prep.! It's good that they know their own limits!

You might get a 49 yrd. shot in Kosci Co. but never here in the jungles of S.E. IN. in Ohio Co. You can't even SEE 49 yrds. in the woods down here. 25 yrds. tops down here.

I had it scored for Buckmasters, they don't have a 60 day drying time. The official score for Buckmasters was 195 7/8 gross and 174 1/8 net that dosen't include the inside spread. The inside spread was 21 6/8 and he field dressed out at 222 lbs.

Amazing buck man! U fools need to shut up bout it being to long of a shot. These bows anymore are automatic at that range if you shoot enough. And steve he would make that shot 9 out 10 not miss it. Enjoy the moment bro. Once in a lifetime if that!

Its not the bow or shooting at that distance, its the deer that brings in the variables. One step with a 60 yards shot and you now have a gut shot. blastin fellow bowhunters for whatever reason, not cool fellas. Great deer Richard congrats!
